The 24 Elder Futhark Runes and Their Meanings

The Elder Futhark is the oldest known runic alphabet, used by Germanic peoples from roughly the 2nd to 8th centuries. Tiwaz: justice, honor, victory through sacrifice. Berkano: growth, fertility, new life. Ehwaz: partnership, trust, forward movement together. Mannaz: the self, humanity, your relationship to others. Laguz: intuition, emotion, the flow of water. Ingwaz: fertility, internal growth, a gathering of energy before release. Dagaz: breakthrough, transformation, a turning point. Othala: heritage, home, ancestral legacy.

How to Cast Runes for a Reading

The simplest method is a single-rune draw: hold your question in mind, draw one rune from a bag without looking, and read its meaning as a direct answer. For more depth, try a three-rune spread laid left to right for Past, Present, and Future, read individually first and then together as a connected story, the same approach that works well for tarot's three-card spread.

Many practitioners carve or paint their own rune set from wood, clay, or stone rather than buying one, believing a handmade set carries stronger personal energy. A printed or purchased set works perfectly well too; connection comes from use and practice, not the material.

The Blank Rune

Some modern sets include a 25th, blank rune representing the unknowable, fate, or a message not yet ready to be revealed. This is a modern addition, not part of the historical Elder Futhark, and many traditional readers omit it entirely. Use it or leave it out based on what feels right to you.
