Waning Moon Release Ritual: Letting Go and Cord-Cutting

As the moon shrinks from full back toward dark, its energy shifts from building to releasing. This is the two week stretch of the month built for letting go, breaking habits, closing chapters, and clearing out what's no longer serving you. This ritual is built specifically around that release, distinct from a general banishing spell, timed and shaped by the moon itself.

What You'll Need

A black candle, paper and pen, and a fireproof dish if you plan to burn your release paper. Black tourmaline or obsidian, if you have either, pairs well with this ritual.

Step 1: Name What You're Releasing

Be specific. "Negativity" is too vague to release cleanly. "My habit of checking my phone the moment I wake up" or "resentment toward a specific situation at work" gives the ritual something real to work with. Write it down.

Step 2: A Cord-Cutting Visualization

Sit quietly and picture whatever you're releasing as a cord connecting it to you, glowing, tangible, real. Light your candle. As you look at the flame, visualize that cord being cut cleanly, and picture both ends closing over, healed rather than left raw. This isn't about severing connection to a person necessarily, it's about severing the hold something has over your energy.

Step 3: Burn the Release

Safely burn the paper you wrote in step one, in a fireproof dish, away from anything flammable. As it burns, say something like: "I release you. You no longer serve me. Go in peace." Let the ash cool completely before disposing of it, outdoors is traditional, but a bin works fine too.

Step 4: Cleanse Your Space

Once the release is complete, cleanse the room, smoke, a salt water spray, or simply opening a window and letting fresh air move through. This clears the space of the energy you've just released rather than letting it linger.

Waning Moon Journal Prompts

What am I still carrying that's ready to be put down? Who or what have I outgrown? What would it feel like to genuinely let this go, not just intellectually, but in my body? What's one boundary I need to set to protect this release?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as a banishing spell?

Related, but not identical. A banishing spell can be cast any time you need to remove something urgently. This ritual is specifically timed to the waning moon's two week release window, and leans more toward a gradual, deliberate letting go than an urgent removal.

Can I release more than one thing at once? Yes, though most witches find naming one thing clearly works better than a long vague list. If you have several things to release, consider doing this ritual across a few different waning moons rather than all at once.

What if the thing I'm releasing is a person? Cord-cutting doesn't require ending a relationship in the physical world, it's about releasing the emotional hold something has, even if the person remains in your life. Adjust the wording accordingly.
